What Paper 2 covers
A dedicated criminal paper — at last
Under the old format, criminal procedure shared cramped quarters with other subjects. The new exam recognises that criminal practice requires explicit expertise and gives it a paper, paired with technology-related law.
The criminal side (from the LPC syllabus)
- The charge sheet and docket: obtaining and analysing them
- Bail: Chapters 9 and 10 of the CPA and s 35(1)(f) of the Constitution
- The charge (ss 80–104) and the plea (ss 105–122), including s 112 admission-of-guilt statements and s 115 plea explanations — form, content and strategy
- Plea bargaining and plea-and-sentence agreements
- Conduct of proceedings, discharge at the close of the State's case (s 174), competent verdicts, sentencing (Chapters 28–29), appeals and reviews (ss 302–324)
- The cautionary rules: single witnesses, identification, confessions, accomplices
The ICT side
- ECTA (Act 25 of 2002): electronic signatures vs advanced electronic signatures, where each is required, and the effect on contracts and non-variation clauses
- Cyber law: cyberattack awareness, risk management and data-response planning for a practice
- Legal technology: how modern practice and courts (including Caselines) actually run
How to use this course
Work in order: the criminal lessons build a matter from charge sheet to appeal, then the ICT lessons cover the modern content the old exam never tested. Do the self-tests, and use the practice exam once you've finished the lessons.
